The bizarre incident happened in front of a home at 119 Sprucewood Drive around 4:30 a.m. on December 14. Officers arrived to find a scorched portable bathroom parked on the front lawn, and witnesses reported spotting an unidentified man fleeing eastbound down Sprucewood Drive, running like a stuntman in an action movie, literally in flames.

Detectives are unsure if the fiery fugitive was an unlucky bystander or somehow involved in sparking the blaze. Either way, his dramatic getaway has left the community buzzing with questions.

The Wantagh Fire Department extinguished the flames, which left the portable potty with heavy damage and the nearby home with only minor singeing. Thankfully, no injuries were officially reported—though detectives aren’t ruling out that the flaming runner might have had a rough morning.

Now, investigators are asking for help. If you saw anything unusual or know the identity of the human torch-turned-runner, Nassau County Crime Stoppers wants to hear from you. Call 1-800-244-TIPS or 911 to share information anonymously.

It’s safe to say this fiery mystery has detectives—and the neighborhood—flushed with curiosity.
